@verolf
I guess things haven't changed that much.
Although very big monitors (22" and up) are becoming increasingly popular, many people are still trapped behind 1024x768 resolutions. This very week I was working on a project which had, believe it or not, support for 800x600 resolutions as a requirement. And the expansion of netbooks also brings the average resolution down a bit.

So my advice would be: if you're redesigning an existing website, check the access statistics to get to know your audience and their setup; if it's a new site, it would be much safer to keep working on 960, at least for a while.

+1 Lexi
Sometimes it can be so difficult to find an answer for a simple question. That page width is preferred to use among designers now a year after this post? Is it 955 px?
