Jaime Lerner, urban planning and web development

January 21st, 2009

Jaime Lerner was for many years mayor of Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil widely known for it’s quality of life, largely due to Lerner’s work as an urban planner.

In this engaging TED talk, he explains the principles which guide his work, and offers a much brighter possibility of future to big cities (and also a little something in the end that makes it quite worth watching.

I think it’s interesting to relate some of the knowledge he shares on urban planning to principles that are rising in the software development mentality, such as the ones stated by the guys at 37signals:

  • Fail fast and cheap
  • Don’t waste time planning when you could be building something
  • Big budgets are not the solution (they can sometimes be the problem

Hope it’s enjoyable.
